The EV revolution continues. Volkswagen recently tested one of its pre-production vehicles, the Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-Motion against other electronic vehicles of its kind at the RAC Future Car Challenge in the UK. A 57- mile battle of lowest energy consumption, the challenge named VW's Golf Blue-e-Motion as the winner of its Prototype class.
The Golf Blue-e-motion uses lithium-ion batteries, has a top speed of 86 mph, and reaches 68 mph in under 12 seconds. It also includes specialized technology within its braking system which helps maximize energy use with a battery regeneration process. This reduces the amount of energy that would otherwise be wasted at such times as traffic-light stops. The Golf Blue-e-motion is very similar to the traditional Volkswagen Golf model, with only a slightly reduced boot volume of 279 liters.
At this time, the vehicle is still in pre-production, which means it will take some time before VW introduces it in the United States. For now, Blue-e-Motion will be tested in small, specific European markets, and it should be on sale to the mass-market in United States by 2014. The great news is that the Golf Blue-e-Motion could be VW's first completely electric vehicle sold here. Volkswagen's first-ever EV will be an electric version of the Up! city car which goes on sale in Europe in 2013.
Although we have a while to wait before the Volkswagen Golf EV hits our shores, the 2012 Passat BlueMotion should hold us over. With one of the lowest-polluting and most efficient diesel engines on the market today, a C02 emission rate of only 109 g/km, and a combined fuel economy of 68.9 mpg, the 2012 Passat Blue Motion is also a great achievement.
