The Volkswagen Microbus enjoys a vaunted place in our cultural consciousness, married to the idea of peace and free love, brought along by the “hippy” movement of the 70s. Well, the microbus is about to get a futuristic makeover, but trust us, it’s going to be great, so great, actually, it’s already won an award. The Volkswagen BUDD-e has been crowned “2016 Concept Truck of the Year” at the 15th Annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards.

The deciding jury consisted of over two dozen jurors, and it recognized the all-electric BUDD-e microbus for raising the bar on automotive design, noting that it offers features that address the utility and mobility needs of both present and future. While it’s not available currently, the BUDD-e concept vehicle uses a 101 kilowatt-hour battery and receives a manufacturer-estimated 233 miles-per-charge. The BUDD-e is also the first Volkswagen vehicle to be built atop the company’s Modular Electric Toolkit platform, capturing the brand’s heritage while still showing off Volkswagen’s next-generation connectivity, infotainment, and EV technology.

“We are thrilled that the BUDD-e has been honored as 2016 Concept Truck of the Year and would like to thank the panel of judges for recognizing Volkswagen’s innovation. We are determined to lead the future of automotive design, and BUDD-e shows the capabilities of our all-new electric vehicle architecture and further advances connectivity and infotainment.” —said by Dr. Hendrik Muth, Director of Product Marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc., while accepting the award.

While there’s still no word on when we’ll see a production model of the BUDD-e microbus arriving into our Myrtle Beach, SC showroom, here at East Coast Volkswagen, we’re always proud and excited to see the many ways Volkswagen is bringing innovation to the automotive industry. However, if you’re on the hunt for an outstanding vehicle in the here-and-now, we’d like to invite you to come check out our new Volkswagen and pre-owned VW inventories to find the VW model that calls your name the loudest!
